Third Landscape Garden in Wrocław
Master diploma project, 2019
with the guidance of dr inż. arch. Roman Rutkowski
In the face of the upcoming climate crisis, it has become necessary to develop a greater understanding of the environment around us. This is essential if we want to ensure a safe future for the next generations. It is therefore essential to rethink current lifestyles and promote more sustainable development in society. The focus should be on increasing our commitment to nature and climate issues. Public space should be a field for such initiatives.
The project aims to rebuild human contact with nature and is based on a profound analysis of the development of this relationship over the centuries. On the basis of the collected data concerning landscape architecture, literature, philosophy and art. The Garden of the Third Landscape has been developed. Nature was invited to replace the existing human activity and its free development defines the character of the project. This is connected with the restoration of the wild status of nature, which, along with technological development, has been subdued to human will. The project of the Garden of the Third Landscape consists of three main ideas:
- ensuring flood safety by providing the Oder River with an area for free flooding,
- rebuilding human contact with wildlife by allowing vegetation to freely take over the area of the Garden,
- demolition of existing buildings and use of materials for the construction of an observatory with accompanying pavilions.
These elements complement each other, creating a complete program for the Garden. Each of them is based on cooperation with nature and adapting solutions to the current development of the landscape. Thus, nature becomes an equal author of the project, and the effect is a common space not only for people but also for the surrounding environment.
