Zbigniew Herbert's Pavilion

Academic project - part of ProtoLab workshops

With the guidance of dr inż. arch. Jerzy Łątka and dr hab. inż. Romuald Tarczewski

In 2018 as part of master's studies, I was a part of an academic workshop course that aimed at designing a paper pavilion. Because of the year, our main topic was the work of Zbigniew Herbert and using the given material, we tried to evoke his poetry in a real form. During a semester, we tackled different aspects of a project like designing the construction, testing materials, finding sponsors and in the end building the project.

In the end, we managed to finalise the project in July and after rainy autumn and snowy winter it is still standing which proves the strength of the structure and durability of the material.

Pulpa Team

Academic project - part of ProtoLab workshop

In collaboration with Patrycja Jędra and Damian Kuna

With the guidance of dr inż. arch. Jerzy Łątka and dr hab. inż. Romuald Tarczewski

During the ProtoLab course, all the students divided into smaller groups with the aim to create an idea for a pavilion from paper. From the beginning, for our team, the most important element of the project was the material. Before designing the pavilion we focused on conducting thorough research on it. We were looking at how to easily change the structure of paper from a simple sheet into something that can be used for an architecture project.

We researched the potential of constructions made from paper mache. Just by mixing water with paper, it is possible to create plastic and highly adaptive mass. Our next step was making domes and other structures from this material to test its limits and additionally, we started adding different ingredients to make it stronger and more resilient. The project grew and started evolving into making bricks and other elements from paper-mache, but due to lack of time and problems with mass production, we had to stop the research on this and focus on the making of a different pavilion.
